Why Egypt works for a honeymoon

Most couples end up choosing between two kinds of honeymoon: the adventure, with early alarms and a full schedule, or the rest, a beach and a pool that is lovely for four days and then feels like a waiting room.

Egypt is one of the few places where you do not have to choose. The first half is as big as travel gets: the Pyramids, the Valley of the Kings, Karnak, Abu Simbel, and the Nile itself, which you sail rather than look at. The second half is a Red Sea coast with warm water, coral a few yards from the sand and resorts built for doing nothing.

It also suits newlyweds for a quieter reason. Almost nobody arrives having seen it before, so you both stand in front of the Great Pyramid for the first time on the same morning.

The three ingredients: Cairo nights, a Nile sailing, a sea finish

Cairo, two or three nights

Cairo goes first because it is the loudest and the most demanding, and you want it while you still have the energy of the wedding week. The Pyramids take a morning, the Grand Egyptian Museum an afternoon, and Khan el Khalili is best after dark. Sleep on the Giza side, facing the plateau, and your first breakfast as a married couple has the Pyramids in the window.

The Nile, four nights

This is the romantic core and the part nowhere else can replicate. Between Aswan and Luxor the river runs past palm groves, sandstone cliffs and temples on the bank, and on a small boat the days fall into a honeymoon rhythm: a temple in the cool morning, the afternoon on deck, a sunset that lasts an hour, dinner under lanterns. The only real decision is which boat.

The sea, three nights

By the end of the river the trip needs an exhale. The coast around Hurghada, or the Sinai side at Sharm el Sheikh and Dahab, gives you a quiet bay, a house reef off the shore and no alarm clock. Put this block last, never first. A honeymoon that ends in Cairo traffic has the emotional shape backwards.

A 10-night Egypt honeymoon itinerary, day by day

This is the version we send most often: Cairo, then Aswan to Luxor on the water, then the coast, with two short domestic flights and one drive. Everything is private.

1. Day 1, Cairo. Arrival, transfer to a hotel facing the Pyramids. No sightseeing. Dinner on the terrace with the plateau lit up.
2. Day 2, Giza and the museum. The Pyramids and the Sphinx at opening time, then the Grand Egyptian Museum for the Tutankhamun galleries.
3. Day 3, old Cairo, then south. A slow morning in Islamic Cairo and the bazaar, then the afternoon flight to Aswan. Evening walk on the Corniche.
4. Day 4, Aswan and boarding. An early start for Abu Simbel if you want it, or a gentler morning at Philae. Board the boat in the afternoon and sail before sunset.
5. Day 5, Kom Ombo. The double temple on a bend of the river, then a long afternoon on deck.
6. Day 6, Edfu. The best-preserved temple in Egypt, then a full day of sailing. On a dahabiya this is the day the captain finds a sandbank and sets the table on the shore.
7. Day 7, Esna to Luxor. A short visit at Esna, the lock, then the final stretch into Luxor. Sunset near Luxor Temple, dinner aboard.
8. Day 8, Luxor west bank, then the coast. Balloon at dawn, the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple in the cool hours, then the four-hour drive east to the Red Sea, arriving for sunset.
9. Days 9 and 10, the sea. Nothing planned. A private boat to a reef if you feel like it, a spa afternoon, dinner on the beach.
10. Day 11, home. A domestic flight from Hurghada to Cairo connects with your departure.

With seven nights you drop the coast. With fourteen you add a night in Luxor and more time at the sea.

Dahabiya or suite cabin: choosing your boat

On a honeymoon the boat matters more than any hotel, because you sleep four nights on it and spend most of four days on its deck. Two formats are worth considering.

A dahabiya is a two-masted sailing boat with four to ten cabins. It sails under canvas for much of the route and moors at islands and sandbanks the big boats cannot reach. The silence is what people remember: no engine, no announcements, no buffet crowd. If you take the whole boat, the crew serves two people.

A suite cabin on a small luxury cruiser is the other choice. These boats carry a few dozen passengers, and the top cabins have a private balcony, a bathtub, a sundeck pool and often a spa. You trade sailing silence for comfort and a fixed schedule.

The conventional large ship, with a hundred or more passengers and a coach at every temple, is the wrong tool for a honeymoon.

Where to stay on land, and the one rule that matters

Cairo. Either a hotel on the Giza side with rooms that face the Pyramids directly, or a historic hotel on the Nile in Zamalek, quieter and more elegant. We put the first night facing the Pyramids, because that is the photograph you will keep.

Luxor, if you add a night. A grand old garden hotel on the east bank, or a small guesthouse among the sugarcane on the west bank facing the Theban cliffs.

The coast. The variable is the setting. An isolated bay gives you quiet and a house reef. A planned enclave such as El Gouna gives you lagoons, a marina and restaurants you can walk to. A town such as Dahab gives you beach-shack culture. Decide first whether you want to be alone or want atmosphere.

The rule that applies everywhere: fewer moves, more nights in each place. Three bases in ten nights is right. Five is a mistake.

The honeymoon touches worth asking for

Egyptian hotels and boats are warm toward honeymooners, and the word itself opens doors. What they do when told varies by property and by how busy the week is, so we ask for specific things, confirm what has been arranged, and never promise what a hotel has not confirmed.

• The bed. Ask for a king bed explicitly. Twin beds pushed together are still a common default in Egypt, on boats especially.
• The cabin or room. Upper deck on the boat, high floor and the right side of the building in the hotel.
• A decorated room on arrival. Many properties lay out flowers, fruit or a cake when they know. Treat it as a pleasant surprise.
• A table for two, set apart. On the shore or at the quiet end of the deck; on the hotel terrace rather than in the dining room.
• A later start. Tell your guide which morning you want to sleep in. A private program can move a temple to the afternoon.
• Late checkout on the last day of each block.
• One evening with nothing on it. No reserved dinner, no early transfer next morning. In a dense itinerary that gap is worth more than another excursion.

Private dinners, a balloon at dawn and the other moments for two

A handful of experiences turn a good Egypt trip into a honeymoon. All need booking ahead.

The balloon over Luxor. You lift off in the dark from the west bank and rise as the sun clears the eastern hills, with the Nile and the temples beneath you. Baskets are shared, so ask about a smaller one. Details are on our page about the hot air balloon over Luxor.

Dinner on a sandbank. The dahabiya crew moors at an island, carries the table ashore and lights lanterns in the sand.

A dinner facing the Pyramids. Several terraces on the Giza side look straight at the plateau. Time it so the sound and light show is running while you eat.

The sea, privately. A private boat for the day to a reef rather than the shared excursion, or, in Sinai, a Bedouin dinner in the desert under a sky with no light pollution.

One note on photographs: a formal shoot in wedding clothes at the Pyramids or a temple needs a permit arranged before you arrive. Casual photos are fine everywhere.

The best months for an Egypt honeymoon, in Fahrenheit and Celsius

The honeymoon season runs from October to April, and inside it there are three moods.

If the sea is the highlight, aim for late October, November or April, when the water is warmest inside the comfortable season. If Luxor and Aswan are the highlight, December through February wins on weather but brings the most people. Dress, public affection and how couples are treated

Holding hands, an arm around a shoulder, sitting close: all normal. Kissing in the street, in a temple or in the bazaar is not done and draws stares rather than trouble. Save it for the deck, the hotel terrace and the resort, where the atmosphere is what you would expect on any honeymoon anywhere.

In the cities and at the monuments, shoulders and knees covered for both of you is the comfortable baseline, with a scarf in the bag for mosques. On the boat and at the coast, dress as you would at home; swimwear stays at the pool and the beach. Our page on what to wear in Egypt has the detail.
